When we got to the event we couldn’t help but notice a lot of people attending: some were sharing ideas with each other, some were willing to help with programming and implement ideas of other teams. There were even people serving coffee and tea! At “Hackathon” we also found a new member for our team: developer Andrew helped us very much.
It took only a few hours of discussions and setting up development environment for us to get completely absorbed in the process. People were working everywhere, but it wasn’t boring or dull in the slightest.
As early as 6.00 am on the event’s second day we had a first stable version on our hands. Yahhhoooo!!!! When you work on something very fast, you somehow manage to outperform yourself and do an improbable number of tasks within a very short time span. And that’s how at already 9.00 am a new geo-location feature was created.
During the entire process of development we made about 200 commits into repository. Sometimes it was hard because when committing the changes you also needed to get version updates from the repository. Then it was necessary to resolve all conflicts (honestly, there were a lot of conflicts in the project because commits occurred every few minutes), create build and ensure that application worked fine and commit the files again. Very frequently just when you were trying to commit updates other members were making commits into repository ... ahh…and you had to update trying to commit again. It was almost impossible to commit the project at once.
What was just an idea in the beginning became an application in the end. iZaniaty (translated into English as “I’m busy”) integrated with Google Calendar and Google Maps API allows users to find services (such as hairdressers, nurses) on specific times and locations.
After a short breakfast we proceeded to stabilization and content management stage and at 13:00 pm work on our presentation had begun. By that time we were really tired and really nervous, especially before the presentation.
I remember the moment when we were waiting for the winners announcement. Our team was awarded “The Best UI Project at Hackby 11”!! And with big smiles on our faces we gladly accepted our well deserved prize.
“Hackathon” was a great experience for everyone involved and probably one of the first events in Minsk to have such a high level of organization. We would like to thank organizers, everyone involved and each other! Roll on “Hackathon 2012”!
